Passing of a BBC head of music and arts
RIPThe Guardian has an obituary for Leslie Megahey, one of the BBC’s gatekeepers in an era when making serious films about music and arts was considered integral to the BBC’s mission. It seems so long ago.
Leslie, who has died aged 77, was head of Omnibus and Arena and, from 1988 to 1991, BBC television head of music and arts.
He was shrewd, responsive and nurturing.
There’s nobody like him left in the BBC.
No, nothing left like him – but mercifully the BBC still have and fund the Proms.
Passing! Uurghhhhh! Get rid of the Americanism. Please!
Yes – I find myself in agreement: The news should be reported as that the admired man in question is now, simply and unfortunately, “dead”.
RIP.
