A marvellous orchestra in a lovely city.

An interesting carrer development. May she have a great time in her new post.

It’s clearly time for the British term ‘Leader’ to be adopted universally. In fact, that term was also used in Australia, but seems to have been replaced, latterly, by the gendered term ‘Concertmaster’.

For all the men who think that this point is irrelevant, how would you like to be known as the ‘Concertmistress’, BTW?

    • NYMike says:

Concertmaster is a gender-neutral term as is Masters’ degree in academia. My late wife held three of them on her way to a doctorate. She certainly didn’t consider them Mistress’s degrees.

“Leader”, in German, is “Führer”. Trust me, that term won’t fly. Konzertmeister is a nice old German term. Feel free to use something else, but don’t expect others to follow.

I noticed you used the gendered term ‘men’. Wouldn’t it have been better to use the term ‘people’?

I presume the same principle applies to the term conductor? Mirga, Jane Glover, Marin Alsopp all renamed a conductress? I think not

  • Lulu says:

Kate was a fantastic principal 2nd of CBSO, Adelaide are very lucky to have her

  • Third Fiddle says:

While all this gender bickering is going on has any great music been created?
