Yannick mourns a principal oboe
NewsThe Orchestre Métropolitain of Montreal has announced the death of principal oboe, Lise Beauchamp. She joined the orchestra in 1993.
Yannick Nezet-Seguin said: ‘Lise was the soul of the Orchestra. She spread her love of music, sense of selflessness for music, to her students and colleagues. I believe she is one of the very few female musicians in the world to have touched so many people, through her playing and teaching, as well as the way she embodied musical life.’
Such a loss…my sincere condolences to all…
Very sad news. Lise was a spectacular musician, and a wonderful, kind and supportive colleague, with a terrific sense of humor.
So sorry she passed away! Is it weird that he mentions her being one of the few ‘female’ musicians to have contributed to so many? There are thousands of women alive today who have made unbelievable impacts in music.
I find it distasteful that he doesn’t waste an opportunity to ever show us he’s righteous, even when writing a tribute to a colleague.
That is a mistranslation from the original French: “elle fait partie des très rares musiciennes dans le monde à avoir touché autant de gens…” In French grammar, the word “musicien” takes the feminine gender because Lise is a woman, but in no way Yannick meant it specifically ‘female’ musician, in that context, it only means ‘musician’ whether male or female. Any native french speaker understands it as such.
I remember a Schubert 9 in Lanaudière a few years ago, where she was absolutely stellar throughout the oboe solos in the second movement. She was integral to the sound of the OM (and its excellent woodwind section), and will be missed.
RIP.
You will be missed.
There is one word too much in the eulogy, “female”, what does it have to do with anything?….
Yikes. Had to look really hard for that comment. Let’s just acknowledge her passing, shall we?
“Female musician” is the translation of “musicienne” (the original text was in French). It doesn’t make a point of setting female musicians apart, it’s merely the feminine form of “musicien”. https://orchestremetropolitain.com/fr/deces-lise-beauchamp/
Exactly.
