Do you mean a Peruvian conductor?
The word “maestro,” as well as the word “ballerina,” is
way, way too often proclaimed.
Thankfully ‘maestro’ isn’t used in the UK (except by NL). Most conductors are (quite rightly) regarded with at least suspicion.
It’s always been one of Norman Lebrecht’s blind spots. He seems to feel there’s necessarily special something about conductors.
Correction: ‘necessarily something special about conductors’.
Not the ordinary competition, Norman: specifically for opera conductors. Previous rounds included a musical piano-rehearsal with singers, and final round featured Bohème Act II with chorus & soloists.
