Maestro Henrique met me in Boston and invited me to play timpani in the Municipal Theater Orchestra in Rio, where he was principle conductor. Wonderful human, excellent musician and a good friend. Rio totally changed my life. I speak more Portuguese than English these days and work almost exclusively with Brasilians.
May Maestro Morelenbaum rest in peace.
So sad. A fine musician end educator. He was born in Poland, I think, and came to Brazil with his family as war refugees.
He can be seen in a João Moreira Salles’s film with Nelson Freire, conducting the orchestra in a Freire concert at Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Theater..
His son, Jaques Morelenbaum, is a cellist, arranger and bandleader who has worked with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Caetano Veloso, among other leading Brazilian popular musicians and composers.
