The Bulgarian soprano has cancelled her role debut as La Gioconda at La Scala with this message:

Dear All, some of you were following my last weeks here on my medias and you know that I have been fighting a very strong flu for a couple of weeks and I am still not in the shape to participate in the rehearsals for la Gioconda at La Scala. Since the premiere is only two weeks away, it is not possible for me to still commit on making my debut in such a demanding role at this point, so I decided with a very heavy heart to withdraw.

I thank you for the comprehension and mostly I thank la Scala for their cooperation and understanding.

I will be debuting La Gioconda in 2024 and will be coming back in Milano this Fall for Fedora.

Don’t anyone think that Covid is over.

It’s not Covid… surely she could not sing the role in the first place. Singing too much too soon has started to have marks her voice, already since a few years now, which is really sad as she’s only 40! But she’s not the first one to have a short career due to bad decisions, so nothing original here

I’m sure everybody is wishing her speedy recovery, myself included. That being said, I wonder at her tackling La Gioconda, and I wonder even more at the La Scala management seeing nothing wrong with this. But then perhaps I shouldn’t wonder, considering who is leading La Scala. Nor do the French wonder at her tackling Bolena, the Spaniards at her Norma, or the Americans at her Elisabetta. It’s ‘everything goes’ these days, and if you dare to ask why there are no quality standards anymore, you are promptly declared ____ (insert slur of your choice, preferably beginning with the letter ‘N’ or ‘r’, which are very fashionable these days.)

  • Nik says:

Why do you assume it’s covid?
The common or garden lurgy has made a strong comeback in the last few weeks.

    • Cynical Bystander says:

You must have realised by now that nobody catches the common cold or gets flu anymore. There is more money for big pharma if we are told it is Covid and just another jab will make it feel just like a cold or flu.

      • Nik says:

I’m not buying whatever it is you’re selling.
Norman is correct in saying that covid is not over. Lots of people are still catching it.
I was only questioning why he made a connection between Yoncheva’s cancellation and covid, since there is no indication that that’s what she’s got.

  • David says:

Ugh, and of course I have tickets to see her in Gioconda, my very first visit to La Scala. I wonder who will be her replacement.

  • Novagerio says:

    Actually, she’s no Gioconda.
Her late compatriot Ghena Dimitrova was.

  • IP says:

The first question is why anyone should want to sing this hideous part, especially with the more lyrical vocal equipment of Yoncheva.

  • Jeremy H says:

This woman is ‘sick’ and unable to sing every other month. Why don’t opera houses tire of such nonsense and not book her anymore?
