Justice Ginsburg’s tchachkes go for 10 times estimate
NewsAn auction of bric-a-brac from the estate of the late Supreme Court justice has raised $803,650 for Washington National Opera, ten times the amount expected.
Justice Ginsburg died aged 87 in September 2020.
A terracotta Pablo Picasso jug sold for $25,000, a Picasso plate for $22,500. A Josef Albers print that hung in her bedroom fetched $27,500.
A silver tea set went for $5,000.
The greatest gift she gave to the next generation was her refusal to retire under a Democratic administration, opening the door to the repeal of Roe v. Wade, a decision that she criticized as an overreach by the court, although she herself was pro-abortion.
Not “pro-abortion,” “pro-choice.” Words matter. And as a woman and mother, she was much better situated than Alito and confrères to adjudicate.
That is totally true. She was asked by Obama to retire and thus secure her successor and she flat refused. Look at the result. Even saints are not perfect it seems….
“A terracotta Pablo Picasso jug sold for $25,000, a Picasso plate for $22,500. A Josef Albers print that hung in her bedroom fetched $27,500.” Hardly bric-a-brac and you know that.
Bric v. brac
This is today’s equivalent of buying a piece of the true cross or a bit of saint. People always have wanted a piece of something that they worship.
A piece of something that they think is important for their status. No worship here. Sadly.
Going to a worthy cause, as she was an opera lover. It’s a good deed indeed.
All in the adoration of a vainglorious old lady whose narcissism got us into the mess we’re in now.
Thank you for identifying the true culprit. Here I thought that McConnell was at fault. Silly me.
Ginsburg by refusing to leave the court even as she was dying helped turned it into a conservative institution. She’s no hero.
