Vienna picks Brit as principal guest conductor
UncategorizedThe new regime at Vienna’s Volksoper has named Ben Glassberg to be principal guest conductor.
He will take charge next season of Flying Dutchman, Merry Wives of Windsor and the Wizard of Oz.
The music director is Omer Meir Wellber.
Honestly, and I am sad to say this, who cares about the Wiener Volksoperanymore? It is right now the place where singers and conductors “go to die” when their talents would not take them any further in their careers. It is in its lowest hours, and some of the performances I have attended in the last seven years have been a complete embarrassment. It has been abandoned in favour of the Staatsoper and Theater an der Wien, houses that have more interesting operatic titles, and much better singers, orchestra(s), choir and conductors. The only productions with some interest at the Volksoper are those of pieces (west-end musical theater works) that would never find their way into the two above-mentioned houses.
He is brilliant. ENO would do rather well to sign him up. But they probably won’t. More fools (yet again) them.
OME is the worst conductor in living memory!
Congratulations to Ben. I was present at his debut at Glyndebourne which was a triumph. I hope he has great success in Vien.
