Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre has put on an ‘Open Curtain’ charity event for the families of soldiers ‘who died during the special military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine’.

Topping the bill was Khatchturian’s ballet Spartacus, a hero designated in 1941 as ‘the best person in all of ancient history, which, according to Marx, is Spartacus.’

The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation said the fundraiser’s ‘key goals are to support the Russian audience, those who help our army; assistance to evacuees from Donbass.’

The concert was introduced by Bolshoi boss Vladimir Urin.

I suppose we must assume that the Bolshoi know little of the Russian Army’s conduct in Ukraine, but this development is still pretty revolting.
I wonder when we’ll see them back in the West… might take a decade or more to live it down

    • JS says:

Why do you think they don’t know? the internet works, all Russians can keep themselves informed. But for Russians, everything that happens in Ukraine is the fault of Ukrainians. I have read with my own eyes comments stating that the Ukrainian army is bombing Ukrainian cities just to blame the Russians. Because for Russians, Russians are always right, everything they do is right and only the lives of Russians are important – because they are Russians. You can’t argue with them – and god knows I’ve tried.

    • Amos says:

Sorry, but I assume that those who want to know, especially among the younger members, are aware of what is going on and shouldn’t be excused. The hypocrisy of the outrage in russia over Ukrainian helicopters bombing a fuel depot on the russian border speaks volumes. It goes without saying that raising money for invading soldiers while cities in Ukraine have been decimated and civilians murdered is beyond despicable.

    • Salvador says:

And that’s what they fairly deserve!
Sanctions unless the eyes wide shut finally open!

No. We have to assume they know.

That’s very interesting: but the picture is from La Scala

    • E says:

      There is a great resemblance
between opera theatres of this classic type. La Scala does not have the large balcony with eight rows, just above the box level, as shown
here. It is odd: it has four levels of boxes, then two
not very deep levels of seats,
Your comment helped me to sort that out. Thanks.
So, this photo is not from La
      Scala.

  • a colleague says:

ah come on. either the bolshoi is at the scala or too lazy to put up an accurate picture of the bolshoi stage. i expect better.

  • Grant Shapps says:

    Please give generously!

  • BM says:

The priority has to go to those soldiers who killed innocent people by shooting them in the head , scoundrels, their families have raised them the ‘right’ way!

  • Mother says:

I didn’t know that lovers of classical music are so monstrously cold like Putin himself. Raising money for mothers of dead soldiers is wrong to you?Every mother’s tear for her lost child is equally heavy. Have some mercy on those mothers and wifes.

  • Greg Bottini says:

The ultimate perpetrator of this war and the war crimes that are inevitably occurring is the loathsome Putain.
As in every damned war, it’s the kids who are trained to kill and who are put in the front lines, where many of them are so wrecked by the experience that they lose their moral compass.
The presidents and leaders – and Gergievs – stay safe in their dachas, well away from the gunfire and bombs.
I do feel sorry for all the dead young soldiers, who are just doing what they have been told to do, and I do feel sorry for their grieving families.
I hope the Russian oligarchs (who haven’t already run off like curs with their tails between their legs) contribute heavily to this charity: it is they who supported Putain throughout his vile career.
    ****Bravo Ukraine****

And who sent the sons of Mother Russia to their totally unnecessary deaths? All the water of the Volga will not wash the blood off those hands.
