The death has been announced in Tokyo of Yoichiro Omachi, chief conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1960s.

He was 90.

A student of Hans Swarowsky, he was the first Japanese to conduct opera and ballet at the Vienna State Opera in 1980. returning for three successive seasons.
