Sydney mourns a brass dynasty
RIPThe family have reported the death of Paul Goodchild, associate principal trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for 35 years, in succession to his father Cliff, who served as principal tuba for 36.
Paul retired two years ago on receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Here’s the family message:
Today we are heartbroken, my dear husband, Morley and Alana’s darling dad, Louise’s devoted brother Paul has died.
He was surrounded by family, music and love. Even though we are feeling lost in a sea of grief, there is also great comfort in knowing that Paul is no longer in pain.
The past two years has been incredibly difficult for Paul as his cancer progressed, yet he didn’t let it stop him from continuing to enjoy life to the very fullest, making sure he cherished every single moment he was with us.
He was a wonderful man – a bon vivant, raconteur, gourmand, trumpeter extraordinaire, brother, father, husband, friend. His legacy will ring out for many years to come. We love you Paul.
My condolences to the family. He was with SSO so long, and its hard to imagine he wont be there playing ever again.
Paul was a fine human being and musician. With his father Cliff, they were Australian music royalty. My condolences to the family.
I taught Louise and want to pass on my condolences to her and Pauls family. I have heard Paul play in the Waverley Church. Have loved the trumpet since. What a wonderful human being!
