The Munich Philharmonic has replaced its sacked chief conductor Valery Gergiev in its upcoming concerts. The stand-ins are Manfred Honeck and Andris Nelsons.

The content is unchanged. Honeck will conduct Bruckner’s eighth symphony.

Nelsons will take over concertos by Prokofiev and Rachmaninov (soloist: Yefim Bronfman), with Prokofiev’s fifth symphony.

Who is the guy in the picture?

  • Another Reader says:

Munich Philharmonic continues to exclude unvaccinated people: 2G rule.

Berlin Philharmonic does not: 3G rule.

Federal law relaxed on March 4 to allow 3G.

    • Reader says:

the rules are made by the State of Bavaria, not the Munich Philharmonic…

      • Wolfgang says:

Munich Philharmonic last year excluded unvaccinated people when it had a choice and the BRSO and many others did not!

        • Djeedo says:

This is wrong, because ALL orchestras in munich have to follow the same rules of bavaria!!
And ALL munich philharmonic members are allowed play, through the whole pandamic!
Right now both orchestras and the choir of the Bayerischer Rundfunk send their unvaccinated members home, they are not allowed to play or sing!! Thats a problem!!!!

          • Facts Matter says:

            No, you are wrong.

2G was *not* the law when Munich Philharmonic imposed it last fall. It was an option that the BRSO, the Staatsoper, the Munich Symphoniker and other bodies did not impose!

    • Djeedo says:

      You are not well informed!
Yes, there is 2G in munich and still only 75% audience is allowed.
These rules are coming from the state of bavaria (directly from Ministerpräsident Söder).
The Munich philharmonic would love to open the house up to 100% and for everybody!!!

      • Richard says:

        Don’t blame only Söder!

Munich Phil excluded unvaccinated people when other orchestras and the Staatsoper allowed them in.

        • Hugo Preuß says:

So the Munich Phil has more common sense and regard for their patron’s health than “other orchestras and the Staatsoper”. Good for them!

  • Petros Linardos says:

Honeck taking over Bruckner (or maybe anything) from Gergiev is a vast improvement.

  • Liam Allan-Dalgleish says:

Frankly, I’m suspicious of anyway being suspended on “ethnic” grounds. But Valery Gergiev, with that throat strangling name, is the biggest musical quack who ever picked up a stick. I’m for the “Kick-out.Gergiev” on musical grounds. Maybe someone could inform him that there are little implants available that will help your hearing.

  • Don Ciccio says:

Wow, a Latvian replaces a Russian close to Putin! Brilliantly done, Münchner Philharmoniker!

  • Don Ciccio says:

As I said before, I believe that Manfred Honeck would make a great music director for the Munich Philharmonic. And he can keep his Pittsburgh post.

  • Pusztay Mária says:

Felfoghatatlan és elfogadhatatlan, hogy világhírű zenészek megbélyegzettek lesznek a származásúak miatt. Ez rasszizmus! Végtelenül szomorú!

    • IP says:

I responded to this appallingly amoral statement in the same language and in the most appropriate tone, which was unfortunately unprintable. Dear Hungarian fascist, please go away.
