A great musician and a fine person. Congrats to them and her.
Unfortunate headline, as there is a group called The Florida Orchestra in the Tampa Bay Area. Jacksonville is at least as noteworthy as TFO, so why not just say Jacksonville in the he’d?
25 years ago, when I heard them in Carnegie Hall, they were a fine orchestra. I assume they’re even better today. Any group that pays close to a living wage generally is excellent these days.
It is good that a woman has been appointed to this position. The first Concertmaster was a Concertmistress, Alice Sager, a homegrown violinist vituoso of great talent and ability, and taught by George Orner at the old Jacksonville College of Music, which was later folded into Jacksonville University. She served for many years, as a student, and then, with the JSO in 1948. She was beloved by orchestra and audience.
