Biz news: Irish mezzo gets a deal
NewsAskonas Holt has signed the Irish mezzo-soprano Niamh O’Sullivan after an apprecinticeship period as a Lies Askonas Fellow.
She is about to appear as Wellgunde in Das Rheingold, in the first installment of Zurich’s new Ring cycle.
Like many new talents, she learned ber trade as a member of the Bayerische Staatsoper’s Opera Studio.
I struggle to understand what this fellowship is. The website says that the fellowship supports each “Fellow with personalized mentorship and guidance.”
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that what management is supposed to offer regardless? Seems like an easy way for the agency to offer management to artists with a way out, in case they can’t get bookings for these youngsters. No mention of financial support, additional performance opportunities the fellowship provides, etc. O’Sullivan is a good singer, something anyone who’s visited Munich the past four years would know, and could have benefitted from full management years ago.
So many get full management, and then end up on the scrap heap at 26, worn out, taken advantage of, and vocally damaged from doing far too much, and far too soon, scrutinised on the Internet these days, and dumped for the next young up and coming singer, and and the cycle starts again. Niamh is a lovely singer. Long may it last.
Ok, but you’re basically just describing bad management. What’s the difference between this fellowship and good management?
can we not see her entire face?
