This tragedy is as personal as it can only get:
My wife and her very ill mother were able to escape from Kharkiv after a 40 hour long trip by an evacuation train under constant shelling and rocket attack. I have picked them up on a Slovak-Ukrainian border yesterday… I can not express the level of pain and desperation, agony and disbelief. Now my mother-in-law is fighting for her life in a Bratislava hospital being a cancer patient currently diagnosed with Covid-related pneumonia. The courage of my wife and her determination, the remarkable readiness of my many Slovak friends and colleagues, the support of my Winnipeg orchestra and hundreds of friends around the world make me feel certain that the good will win over evil after all!
In addition to my previous statement, condemning the war the Russian Government, led by President Putin is waging on Ukraine, I would like to send the following message in order to eliminate any and all misunderstandings: In these extremely distressing times, while my family members are being bombed by the armed forces of the country I was born and grew up in, I am suspending all immediate and future work and concert appearances in Russia. Until the senselessly barbaric bestialities are halted, peace restored and justice served, I do not feel being on moral ground while collaborating with institutions subsidized by the murderous Russian regime.
