The Metropolitan Opera’s general manager is seen here attending the general rehearsal of a new Lohengrin at the Bolshoi, a co-prodution with the Met that is directed by the Canadian Francois Girard and conducted by Washington National Opera maestro Evan Rogister.

(Sanctions, what sanctions?)

The production opens tomorrow.

  • Brettermeier says:

    Pathetic.

  • Gustavo says:

I think it’s fine if the arts are not affected by what politicians on both sides are breaking their little heads about.

    Let things flow.

  • Placido says:

Can he please stay there? His approach to leadership and respect for his employees is very similar to Putin’s. He must feel right at home

  • V.Lind says:

His timing couldn’t be worse. It’s unfortunate — this will have been planned over a long period. Cancelling it would likely have been out of Gelb’s hands. But he should not have attended. It’s a terrible slap in the face to all those trying to use sanctions to prevent all-out war.

    • Tiredofitall says:

OUT OF HIS HANDS? Please. You just don’t get on the plane. Since his Keri-Lynn has a fairly regular gig at the Bolshoi, he may feel obligated. After all, what is allegiance to one’s country?

  • Gustavo says:

“Sometime they’ll give a war and nobody will come.”

  • Kevin Lewis says:

Peter Gelb’s doing the right thing. Russia didn’t invade anything. The 2 independent republics voted to secede. A similar decision was made by Crimea in 2014. There’s absolutely nothing the US can do about it, especially with China on the side of Russia. But the Bolshevik left of today is hungry for war, blood and carnage. If you want peace, sweeties, stop building NATO military bases along the Russian border. Хорошего дня!

    • Kathleen E King says:

Kevin, Kevin, are you sure it’s not IVAN? Russia had been returned to its original status as a third world ASIATIC culture after centuries of empire building in emulation first of Rome and then of Europe. Putin wants to return to what he and Peter the Great saw as “civilization”; no problem except they and the rest of the riche of Russia see that being done by enslaving other nations, obliterating their cultures, and that starts with Ukraine. Those of you who try to put an onus on the nations who DO have economies, who do seek freedom and political existence are at best mistaken, but more likely parroting “Pravda”.

    • Tiredofitall says:

      “Sweetie”, Grow up.

    • DG says:

Don’t forget to re-up your subscription to Pravda!

    • Brettermeier says:

“If you want peace, sweeties, stop building NATO military bases along the Russian border. ”

That’s, of course, one possible approach, дорогая снежинка.

Another one would be to just wait until you’re bankrupt*. Again. Like last time. Remember, “Kevin”? 😉

“China on the side of Russia”

That’s just hilarious! 😀 Let me help you put the picture you’re trying to paint here in perspective:

      Russia is humping China’s leg.

      There you go.

      Привет из Германии!

*) Even more than now, that is.

(Did I mention that “voting to secede” is up to ten years in prison in Russia? You know that, of course, “Kevin”, but others might find this fact interesting, considering that’s your “pro” argument.)

    • Marcio says:

So few words have seldom said so much and,for this, you get 6 ups and 44…Putin AND Trump are the only, only echt statesmen around who can save us from the leftgeddom. What a lousy moronic inferno i have to wake up to every damn day.

    • Seth I. Chodosh says:

      WHOAH…..
How deep does Vlad The Impaler nail you to make you squeal like that?

    • Seth I. Chodosh says:

      Whoa…
How deep did Vlad -the-Impaler have to nail you to make you squeal up that crap?

  • Kathleen E King says:

What an appropriate location for him. Can we leave him there — or better yet send him to the front lines in front of one of the tanks!

  • Paul Johnson says:

    Crisis? What crisis?

  • Celia Thaxter says:

Mind you, he is in Russia as 2022-23 is announced. It is an scandal that his wife is conducting.

  • Daniel G says:

Let’s hope he stays there. He would do us all a big favor with the mess he has made at the MET Opera.

  • Charles M Fischbein Phd says:

By supporting Gelbs ties to Bolshoi and Marinsky rin by Putin supporter Giergiev you are supporting war criminals and are just as bad .
Shame on you but your type is more interested in money from Russian artists and common human decency
