Great-looking season. Well-balanced between new and familiar, and older but less frequently available.
Hope the Saturday afternoon broadcasts resume. I used to clear my decks in season.
Why is no one mentioning the fact that yet again there is a clear absence female stage directors? Yet again, with the exception of Julie Taymor’s MAGIC FLUTE revival – not a single woman is directing in an opera? How is this possible? In 2022? And do we need 5 productions from Sir David McVicar? 5? Perhaps a feminine perspective could benefit this great Institution? It’s good to see more female Maestros on the list of course, but hopefully some female stage directors (and composers?) are on their way to the MET?
Hopefully some _decent_ stagings are on their way to the Met. Trash is trash, regardless of the stage director’s gender.
Your comment is typical of this time and age. Why this obsession with staging? Why not with singing? Why not with the words? It isn’t called opera for nothing. Why not with _quality_? Could it be because you don’t understand, or don’t care about music? If so, why do you waste your time with an art form you don’t understand? As a thinly disguised pretext for strident activism?

With all due respect, this is a bit of a misleading headline. Netrebko’s not missing from the season at all; she’s singing in their revival of Don Carlo in November.
She is supposd to sing Elisabetta in Don Carlo………….
Now please … did anyone with functioning ear drums and a few brain cells ever really think she would sing Elsa – anywhere, ever again? (Notice how she let all those plans for Abigailles all over the world slowly slip away till no one noticed … or gave a damn?)
But why is this the headline? There is so much good stuff happening, with young and senior dependable singers (James Morris at 74!) who perform roles in languages of which they have at least a basic knowledge (although I did hear Stikhina sing a very impressive Salome, although in some indiscernible arcane language).
Nice to see Kathy Goeldner up there.
So the sneak preview last week was pretty much on. Well, any MET season with their timeless John Dexter production of Dialogues of the Carmelites is a good one.

Gelb’s given his wife a gig conducting Shostakovich. That’s utterly shameful and nepotism and a violation of law. As they are a bona fide Not For Profit operation, he has to document for the State of New York that there is no other conductor who is qualified and either can, or wants to conduct those performances. This should be brought to the attention of the NY AG. Legally, he has a problem here. I have been through the exercise myself with a similar organization where I was related to the head of the organization. Like she’s the first person related to someone else who gets a gig? You think the State of New York is qualified to determine who is qualified to conduct at the MET? You might have a checklist that would certify that the person is qualified in their field. Ms. Wilson is a conductor with years of experience around the world; she doesn’t have to be Simon Rattle to meet the test.
And she’s an independent contractor, not an employee, which would probably make it a harder case.
First of all, she’s not a great conductor, she’s a hack oompah opera conductor. Second, the policy covers contracted staff. The State of New York AG is absolutely by law the steward of such situations and the MET has to prove that there is no one else to take the job. This is the the wife of the MET’s General Manager to whom they are going to pay a benefit. If they were for-profit, different story entirely. The NY AG Letitia James has been notified at this point by several people connected to the opera house itself. Nepotism in not for profit is not a good look.
There is plenty of great opera available without the Russian show-horse, Anna Netrebko.
What would a Met season be without everyone’s favorite Neo-Nazi singing Wagner? Thanks, once again, to Peter Gelb for saying that we have to be especially sensitive to the people who have made mistakes. Should be a wonderful Lohengrin. I myself will boycott, as usual.
I don’t suppose this is a sign of the Met finally dropping Netrebko, but one cam dream…
