Europe’s church composer of the year is…
News… the Latvian Peteris Vasks.
Sadly, the prize is only worth 5,000 euros, which wll scarcely pay his heating bills.
The award will be made on July 16 in the Festival of European Church Music in Schwäbisch Gmünd.
To be honest, and involved in church music, I’ve never heard of him here in England. Must do my homework.
He is a wonderful composer, mostly of orchestral and chamber music. Try his second cello concerto for starters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSA7pw11WqQ&ab_channel=thiagoblanco

Actually, Maria, this link is probably more helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwoUJysOn90
A non-festival. And a meaningless prize. They are just pinning a medal on their own chests.
