The risks no-one tells you about jumping in for an opera
NewsThe Australian soprano Jessica Pratt took over as Lucia at short notice in Naples … and nearly lost a limb to the falling curtain.
She writes:
After I “fainted” for the last time, I lay on the stage relieved that I had made it to the end. Then I heard “sipario” “sipario” coming from the chorus and I looked up to see the curtain coming down right on top of me. So I threw in one last “coloratura agility” of the evening, from now on to be known as “the Pratt escape”.
Dangers of jumping in.
Jumped in as Lucia last night in Naples and just when I thought I had made it to the end with no blunders I realised I had ‘fainted’ too far downstage and the curtain was about to squash me 😂 pic.twitter.com/UyG1SMPlHh

Scary. Glad she made it. Surely the curtain operator is looking out for problems like this?
Lucky audience, Jessica’s Lucia is superior to Sierra’s coldness and disinterest. And the high notes are solid GOLD.
……………a real professional!
One of the funniest opera clips Ive seen. Hilarious! She is such a pro.
