Cochineal. Replacing our beloved Cocktails with the Curator series comes Where in the World? a new series from the Frick. It investigates the origin of various elements contained in their artworks.

Where in the World isn’t as good, it’s more stilted and less personal than Cocktails with the Curator but while we wait for the Powers That Be at the Frick to listen to our pleas and bring back Xavier Salomon and Aimee Ng for our weekly art history wallow, it’ll suffice and, in fact, is thoroughly interesting.

We already looked at Gold, now here’s Aimee with sculpture curator Giulio Dalvit talking about Cochineal, that extraordinary red colour that came from squashed Mexican beetles. Really. Who knew?

    Just visited the Frick collection, currently in renovation exile in the Breuer building which formerly housed the Whitney Museum. The more conventional gallery set-up highlights the qualities of the individual works which were somewhat overshadowed by the splendor of the house setting. Absolutely worth the visit, or an exploration of the mobile app.
