The newly reopened Concertgebouw has scheduled a concert on Sunday February 6 in memory of its late conductor.

Ivan Fischer will conduct Mahler’s first symphony, with a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage, A Cortege for Bernard Haitink.

Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix will attend the concert.

Fischer says: ‘Bernard Haitink was a real conductor, in the sense that a conductor is an authority in ethical, humane and artistic fields, who is highly respected by the people around him. The music world, the Netherlands and Amsterdam should be grateful to Bernard Haitink for guiding our cultural well-being with an unmistakable sense of judgement, taste and responsibility. We will continue in his way.’

Good. I like the fact to make a second tribute 4 month after the death. I hope that it will be with a public at 100%. Also there will be Chailly with the RCO early March. he don’t comes back frenquently in Amsaterdam.

I’m wondering whether there will be a possibility to get my hair done during the Turnage.

      • Concertgebouw79 says:

Outside of the history of the RCO, if you look at the history of the concert hall you will be very surprised to look at the list of people you would never imagine to do a concert here. Like for exemple Johnny Hallyday or Frank Zappa.

  • John Borstlap says:

The choice of Mark-Anthony Turnage for a commemoration piece is hilarious….. since he is representing everything in the universe that is contrary to Haitink’s artistry:

So far for “…… guiding our cultural well-being with an unmistakable sense of judgement, taste and responsibility.”

    “Langsam. Schleppend. Wie ein Naturlaut”

How irreverent to commemorate the death of a Brucknerian with such sounds.

“Wie die Tiere den Jäger begraben”

Rather a grim photo to head this column with!

  • Corno di Caccia says:

Good to see a concert planned to Bernard Haitink’s memory by the orchestra he had such a long, but not always entirely harmonious, connection to. I agree with others with regard to the new piece. I prefer to call said composer Mark Anthony Carnage as I’ve never liked anything he’s composed.

  • Frank Flambeau says:

Ivan Fischer would be a worthy full-time replacement.

  • Barry Guerrero says:

I’m not a Turnager either. Regardless, I’m just happy they’re doing something in Amsterdam to commemorate Bernard Haitink. As a fan of Mahler’s music, he was a major contributor in bringing exposure to Mahler’s music in many cities. He did so much wonderful work in Amsterdam, including his equally fine efforts in Debussy and Ravel. He wasn’t always the most ‘exciting’ conductor on the block, but he was always thoroughly professional and a class act. Haitink is badly missed.
