Jaap gets Christmas TV prime time
NewsThe Concertgebouworkest has given its nationally televised Christmas Day concert to Jaap Van Zweden, outgoing chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
The concert will consist of Matthias Goerne singing songs from Mahler’s Knaben Wunderhorn, followed by Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
For Covid reasons, the concert will be pre-recorded.
Good program and Goerne is fantastic. He sang Wotan in the Hong Kong Ring to great international acclaim (Naxos).
Good for him, but is it Chistmasy?
Not realy this Concertgebouw concert is not what we can call a festive concert… The only exeption was maybe three years ago when they did the Nutcracker in entirety. And when when you do Mahler 9th….
The finale of Beethoven VII is the expression of heavenly joy after opening the Xmas presents.
This concert is a big classic on the dutch tv and outside. The 80’s éditions were famous for the Mahler symphonies by Haitink he did one every year. Later Chailly and Jansson did the samething.
He was the concertmaster for several of the Haitink Kerstmatinees in the ‘80s, including the legendary Mahler 9 in 1987
Maybe the Dutch can stomach him. Two orchestras in American could not.
Bad for Amerika.
Indeed! They tried everything to keep him there, but the virus intervened.
Even if he’s not the director, it’s very gladdening to see them maintaining the closeness of their relationship.
That photo…We wish you a scary merry Christmas!
How can we view/access tge performance?
The concert has been cancelled because of new lockdown restrictions.
Bah, Humbug!!
Indeed – there won’t even be a performance without audience. The whole thing has been called-off, to deep chagrin of everybody concerned, including audiences.
“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch….”
