The Concertgebouworkest has given its nationally televised Christmas Day concert to Jaap Van Zweden, outgoing chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic.

The concert will consist of Matthias Goerne singing songs from Mahler’s Knaben Wunderhorn, followed by Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.

For Covid reasons, the concert will be pre-recorded.

    Good program and Goerne is fantastic. He sang Wotan in the Hong Kong Ring to great international acclaim (Naxos).

      Not realy this Concertgebouw concert is not what we can call a festive concert… The only exeption was maybe three years ago when they did the Nutcracker in entirety. And when when you do Mahler 9th….

      The finale of Beethoven VII is the expression of heavenly joy after opening the Xmas presents.

    This concert is a big classic on the dutch tv and outside. The 80’s éditions were famous for the Mahler symphonies by Haitink he did one every year. Later Chailly and Jansson did the samething.

    He was the concertmaster for several of the Haitink Kerstmatinees in the ‘80s, including the legendary Mahler 9 in 1987

    Maybe the Dutch can stomach him. Two orchestras in American could not.

    Even if he’s not the director, it’s very gladdening to see them maintaining the closeness of their relationship.
