This is a short digital film from the Los Angeles Opera of a piece composed by Carlos Simon to a poem by Sandra Seaton and choreographed by Jamar Roberts. It is sung by tenor Joshua Blue and the interpretive dancer is Lloyd Knight. It brings to life the thoughts of an imprisoned man on the day before his release.
The composer describes it thus, “This piece is a soliloquy of sorts from the perspective of an inmate experiencing life as a prisoner while finding hope and solace in the freedom of a bluebird. I’ve composed dark, brooding music to represent the mundane life of prison, which transforms later into a vibrant dance when the inmate gazes and admires the colourful bird.”
