I first saw “Revelations” in 1971 (I think), when the Ailey company played Royce Hall, UCLA – when Judith Jamison lit up the theater with her glorious smile and her exquisite dancing I returned for every concert, since each evening ended with this masterpiece. I never missed a chance to see it over and over again through the years. I watched this video and saw it again, 50 years later – and it still gives me chills. Simply put, the dancing and the music make you feel alive and joyful and free. Thanks for posting this wonderful program. Watch all of it, but if you must, start it at one hour 40 minutes for the beautiful performance of Ailey’s great gift to us all. If you’ve never seen it, this will be … a revelation.
Oops. The start of “Revelations” is at one hour 17 minutes or so.
I saw it on stage perhaps 30 years ago too. This was one of the great American modern dance companies of the second half of the 20th century, and it is wonderful to know that it still thrives. Too many companies intimately entwined with their founders do not outlast their lives. (Where now will Merce Cunningham’s works be performed?).
Looking forward to watching this — all of it.
