Another Canadian rising
NewsThe Japanese cellist Michiaki Ueno won the majorly underexposed Geneva International Music Competition this week.
A greater share of attention went to the second-placed cellist Bryan Cheng, an ascendant Canadian in a year that has seen Canada established as a major musical power.
Cheng, 24, was the 2019 Grand Prize winner at the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Competition. He is already booked by Berlin for June 2023 with the Deutsches-Symphonie Orchester de Berlin, conductor Alpesh Chauhan.
Bryan gave a gorgeous performance of the Elgar Concerto, as well a demonstrating a keen understanding of baroque-pre-classical style in the semi-final recital. He and pianist sister Sylvie form a winning (literally and figuratively) duo team. It should also be noted that Bryan won the audience prize in Geneve. It was a spectacular competition and, yes, rather under reported. Thanks for picking this story up!
