There’s a nasty situation developing in Rouen, where the concertmaster of the opera house, Jane Peters, has been dismissed.

Peters, 58, is a former bronze medal winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition and an arts ambassador for Australia.

Everyone is at pains to stipulate that the dismissal has nothing to do with the quality of her playing. Peters was dismissed by the Rouen Opéra director, Loïc Lachenal, in consultation with the music director Ben Glasberg, after complaints by a majority of her musician colleagues, which she rejected.

The dismissal has been upheld by the French labour courts.

She looks young for a lady of 58. She looks 28.

What are the complaints from the musicians about her?

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Has she been found guilty of thought crime?

  • Simon Scott says:

Terrible. However, judging by her playing and credentials she won’t have any trouble finding another job.

I remember her from the Queen Elisabeth competition. Marvellous violinist. Sparkling personality!

It’s impossible to get fired in France, what did she do, eat her children on stage? even then, it’d just be a “stern reprimand in the strongest term possible”…

Interesting that when you visit this article, while the headline reads merely “An Opera Concertmaster is fired in France”, the description in the web browser is “French fire opera concertmaster for not being French”. Tell us what you really think, Norm! At any rate Jane Peters has been living in France for at least twenty or thirty years.

The original story contained such speculations (and one or two other errors); what you are now seeing is a much corrected version!
