The eminent conductor and volinist András Ligeti has died suddenly in Budapest.

A protege of Georg Solti and Claudio Abbado, he was involved in seeting up the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. He went on to become chief conductor of Hungarian State Opera in the 1980s and of the Budapest Symphony post-Communism, touring extensively in Europe and Asia.

In the UK he conducted at Opera North and in Australia he was principal guest in Perth.

His last known post was as music director of the Taipei Symphony in Taiwan.
