Last summer Malin Broman, concertmaster of Swedish Radio, played the Mendelssohn Octet all by herself.

Now she’s working on a new piece based on Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own.

Malin plays violin, viola and cello, as well as whistling and reciting lines of Woolf text.

There is a concert DVD available of Julia Fischer playing Saint-Saens 3rd violin concerto in the first half and Grieg’s piano concerto in the second half. That’s quite an achievement!

There’s nothing wrong with being a multi-instrument performer. Malin also shows us that when she can play the violin, cello, the viola isn’t that hard to pick up. We need more performers like her.

Is that a backhanded compliment to viola playing? Imagine the response if the sentence was: “Malin also shows us that when she can play the viola the violin and cello aren’t that hard to pick up.”

Well, let me serve you the Bad Viola Joke of the Week.

You take your shoes OFF, to jump on the trampoline.

She’s amazing. That Mendelssohn video is one of the musical highlights of the pandemic.

I’m curious how she will cope in a live-performance of that piece..
