In a further interview today, the Salzburg Festival doctor Josef Schlömicher-Thier says: ‘I can already see that at this level the singer’s depression has entered.’

This does not apply to world stars. ‘The people who sing here are all trained, mentally strong singers who have long since survived this screening.’ But younger singers are unprepared for the pressures and particularly for wearing masks which, the doctor says, ‘dry out their mouth.’ The pnly benefit of Covid is that singers have arrived at the festival more rested than usual.

I work with young opera singers all the time and I have yet to meet one who isn’t double-jabbed (as much as they can be) in the past 6 months. I have however seen many of them distressed by the fact the few jobs they had lined up vanished. Then when something comes up, they feel the pressure of performing again at the top of their game with usually less preparation, less rehearsal time and huge distanciation between colleagues. One might argue it’s the same for pianists, violinists, etc., but it’s not. When a pianist is depressed, fearful or anything negative, his piano is not; when a singer is depressed, fearful or anything negative, the instrument is as well. Singers carry it with them all the time and cannot just put it to rest in a box at night. Please show them a bit of compassion.

Yeah, folks. Go get your jab, and you can return to life as normal. Who knew the vaccine was effective against depression as well as COVID?

    • Don’t downvote vaccines says:

Ken – sorry for all the anti-vaxxers on this site who would downvote that. Delta will get them, worry not.

    is he a private doctor

  • Maria says:

The work wasn’t really there before the pandemic, unless you were a star, and they are few and far between. As far back as the 70s, we were all told as singers to have a second string to your bow like actors, so I trained as a Pa and worked as a temp when I wanted to anf needed to, which saved my voice and paid for regular lessons and fine coaching. I’d be more depressed if I were in Haiti or Aphganistan with nothing at the moment.
