Broadway shuts down West Side Story

The Scott Rudin production of West Side Story, which opened in February 2020 just before the pandemic, will not be revived when Broadway reopens.

‘It is with great regret that we are announcing today that the 2020 Broadway revival of West Side Story will not reopen,’ said producer Kate Horton. ‘This difficult and painful decision comes after we have explored every possible path to a successful run, and unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, reopening is not a practical proposition.’

One of the co-producers was Scott Rudin, who has been accused of abusive and bullying workplace behavior.

Maybe the Spielberg film doesn’t want any competition or onerous comparison?

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

“Abusive and bullying workplace behaviour”? Here we go again. More pearl-clutching from precious and very very special snowflakes, I’m betting.

    • Tiredofitall says:

Pay attention, Sue. This has been well-documented. But go ahead, Scott Rudin may be in the market for an assistant.

    • V. Lind says:

Your bets, as usual, are based on not believing women, and on assuming no man’s sexual aggression or inappropriate behaviour could ever be distressing to another. Jack the Ripper would have loved you.

      • Xavier says:

Not believing women is a Democrat mantra since it enables their primitive behavior.

Look where it got Hillary Clinton, Andy Cuomo as well as both the #MeToo and #TimesUp people. They’ve all predictably fallen while baselessly accusing others. Hilarious!

Hunter Biden is quite the albatross to the administration, isn’t he?

The left should get educated about the individuals they ‘think’ they trust.

Sue – I’m doubting that you’ve ever had a job where your boss threw things at you, placed harrassing phone calls to you in the middle of the night, or screamed at you for minutes on end. In fact, I’m doubting that you’ve ever had any job at all. Please try to control yourself from commenting on things about which you clearly know nothing. Which, it appears, would be most topics on this site.

        More’s the pity.

  • BigSir says:

The Biden administration should make it economically feasible for shows, as well as the rest of the arts organizations, to start up again. Infrastructure isn’t just roads.

    • NotToneDeaf says:

This show was given $10 million in bail-out money (which it is returning). What more would you have Biden do?

  • And the Beat Goes On says:

This production was savagely over produced, burying the beloved story & immortal music (as well as the talented cast) under a sunami of cheap tricks, all designed to distract the audience’s attention. The genius of the original creators got pummeled as the director ran rampant over it.

  • Aline says:

Good!! In my opinion, Ivo van Hove is a terrible director. He ruins everything he touches. He completely killed Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge” a few seasons back. If they ever are going to do a Broadway revival, PLEASE use a different director.

  • NotToneDeaf says:

One wonders why this show isn’t reopening but yet “The Music Man” – another Scott Rudin production – is opening in a couple of months. Ditto for “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

    • Tiredofitall says:

Two words – star power (Jeff Daniels and the wildly popular Hugh Jackman). West Side Story — despite a large and talented cast for the iconic musical, had no “names” for tourists (the mainstay of Broadway) to latch onto.

      • Saxon says:

A good production can survive without “stars” but it needs favourable reviews. It seems the show opened at the wrong time, and the reviews aren’t there and aren’t going to be there.

  • Tom Phillips says:

Please flag and remove all pro-Nazi posts such as those of the right-wing subhuman savage above (i.e. “Chris”) – that encourage and promote racial genocide of Jews
