Still nowhere near as bad as his Boheme in outer space.
Must be Novus Ordo. Believe me many of the nearly defunct Sisterhoods are just as bad and mad as these.
Or his Fidelio with the dialogues replaced by hideous electronic noises (Salzburg)
Or his Rigoletto in a cardboard box (Paris)
Or his Tannhäuser in a lunatics asylum (Vienna)
Or… well, whatever. If only he could find a new occupation
Nothing wrong with a Wagner opera in a lunatics asylum. Otherwise, I agree.
Wow! What a genious! How much are his incomes for these legendary productions?
I store in my head three lists of Regisseurs whose work:
I will always try and see, and in some cases even travel to see (Konwitschny, Morabito & Wheeler, Keith Warner, Robert Carsen, and more);
I will never again subject myself to, having consistently ruined enough productions through their idiocy and disrespect (the usual suspects);
I will wait until after the premiere to decide, when I can discuss the production with friends/colleagues who dove in on opening night.
Herr Guth falls into this third category. He has given me a few unforgettable, sublime evenings (topped by his staging of “Messiah” at Theater an der Wien) and some total trash (his 2003 Bayreuth “Der fliegende Holländer”).
I can’t find much of anything to say about these costumes. I’d rather talk to colleagues in Frankfurt and/or read reviews from the few remaining trusted sources.
It’s very odd, because he talks sense and comes across as actually having an interesting interpretation of the opera, but the production doesn’t enhance the music in any way. Maybe he has got too immured in his gimmickry, although this doesn’t seem as gimmicky as some others.
Walked out of this opera in Frankfurt tonight. Just too much eurotrash for one evening. Mother Superior in a giant incubator instead of a coffin, anyone? I’m all for taking some liberties with an opera. But this was ridiculous.
