  • Claremonter says:

I heard soprano Emily Pogorelc as Cunegonde in Bernstein’s “Candide” with the Washington (D.C.) National Opera at the Kennedy Center, and thought she was quite sensational.

  • fred says:

many from russia (8)? Well there also also many from the US (7) and many from other countries

  • H Rosen says:

Not one from the UK. Says it all about the “world beating” conservatories there. Really think the whole way singers are trained in the UK should be looked at..

    • Wurm says:

Maybe they are trained to be singers with careers, rather than just competition winners whose star then gradually / quickly fades?

      • Phillipe says:

Oh yes! Operalia winners quickly fade. I could remember some winners who became losers, like Lise Davidsen, Sonia Yoncheva, Roth-Costanzo, Angel Blue, Lisete Oropesa, Pretty Yende, Rosa Feola, Susanna Phillips, Joseph Calleja, Erwin Schrott, Joyce Di Donatto, Jose Cura, Ninna Stemme, Kwangchul Youn. They really faded very quickly …

        • Claremonter says:

          Don’t forget Emily d’Angelo.

        • Peter says:

Well…. almost all of the singers you mentioned are actually B or C category singers – defintely not top singers. They won’t even be remembered as great singers.
The fact that they are having a big career is only due to the mafia from this contest’s jury – not one single opera singer, but only opera intendants/agents, who do business between themselves… I wonder if the jury will still include the same people, at least Marta (what recommends her, except being Domingo’s long-time, lifelong cheated wife??) will be there for sure :-))))
          Cheers!

        • Sandeling says:

          And don’t forget Rolando Villazon….

    • Emil says:

Another possibility would be that they had to apply before travel rules were relaxed, and were unable/unwilling to plan without guarantees on how travel would pan out.

    • IP says:

It is more precise to say “world beating, notation decolonizing”. And you get more explanatory power.

  • Anthony Sayer says:

Yes, Axelle Fanyo and Marie-Laure Garnier.

  • Ulrich Brass says:

Ivan Ayon-Rivas alrady has an international career. He has sung Rodolfo at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, il duca at Rome (in the theatre and in the new Michieletto production at Circo Massimo last summer). He has recently sung Faust at La Fenice with critical acclaim and he is singing at alla Scala Macbeth first night opposite Anna Netrebko (not Macduff tho, only Malcolm)

  • Brian says:

Maybe Operalia is becoming like the Olympics: Japan aside, most liberal democracies don’t want anything to do with the games, and they’re forced to set up shop in dictatorships and rogue states. Nobody on the list rings a bell to me.
