The promising Joel Sandelson, 27, is one of three conductors contesting the high-profile Salzburg prize this summer.

The others are a Chilean, Luis Toro Araya, 25; and a Swiss, Jonas Ehrler, 29. The jury is chaired by Manfred Honeck.

Past winners include Mirga, Lorenzo Viotti, Ben Gernon and Kerem Hasan.

Does this mean he’ll be black-listed if he wins the Karajan competition?

  • fflambeau says:

Rather than dwell on their nationalities, which are pretty much meaningless, why not tell us about their backgrounds and what they bring to music?

  • fflambeau says:

Looking at their vitas, and nothing else, I would say the two other candidates have better backgrounds but this is my impression alone and I don’t know any of them and have never seen them conduct. 2 have Swiss connections. It would be interesting to know who else is on the jury.

I have mentioned that before, but here we go again: why doesn’t “Mirga” have a last name, unlike her three male colleagues? Unless one is a personal friend, this shows a lack of respect. Granted, there are more “Johns” in the world than “Mirgas”, and I realize that everybody knows who is meant, which would not be the case with Lorenzo, Ben and Kerim. But it is still not the proper way to address someone.

Let me humbly suggest to change that policy. Either first names only or the full name for everybody, regardless of gender.
