Vienna Opera sells off frocks
UncategorizedThe Vienna State Opera has put up some of its used costumes for an online charity auction at Dorotheum on 29 June.
This one is Elisabeth I from Donizetti’s opera Roberto Devereux. It was worn by Edita Gruberova and has a starting bid of € 2,000.
Also on sale are Anna Netrebko’s Micaëla dress in Franco Zeffirelli’s Carmen production and a three-piece costume for the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, worn by Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Neil Shicoff and Piotr Beczala.
How often do they make new dresses? Anna Netrebko was 7 years old when Zefirelli’s magnificent production was premiered.
Kindly justify the adjective “magnificent”. All I ever saw was something that looked like it was cut with scissors from the back of a package of Kellogg’s Krispies, when they offered miniature prosceniums and sets for playtime.
It’s all subjective, but I have a hard time relating your description to that production.

Do they have a fitting room at the auction?
I want to be sure it fits before I bid.
Hmm…if you have to ask…
Joking aside, all you will see going forward are cheap, ugly regie productions with singers in street clothes or rags and someone reciving credit for “costumes design”. Sad… I guess they will be selling Der Rosenkavalier costumes next. Thak God for DVDs that preserved the beautiful productions.
Not necessarily Eurotrash: most singers’ names mentioned in the Dorotheum website are from the sorely missed pre-regie beautiful productions.
