Three years after he was sentenced to jail for sexual assaults, the former Munich academy chief Siegfried Mauser has yet to spend  night behind bars, protected as he is by influential friends in the music world and a powerful legal team.

From today’s Süddeutsche Zeitung:

Siegfried Mauser, the former President of Munich’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater, who was convicted of sexual assault, has still not started his prison sentence, even three years after the verdict. A spokesperson for the Salzburg Regional Court said that the examination of whether he is unfit for a custodial sentence is still ongoing.

Several expert opinions have already been submitted, but at least one ist still pending. As soon as that has been received, the court would decide. Mauser would actually have had to start his sentence in Landsberg prison in Germany starting in January 2020, but he filed an application to be able to serve his sentence in an Austrian prison.

Mauser holds both German and Austrian citizenship and lives in Austria. In May 2020, the Salzburg Regional Court served him with a notice of execution of sentence. After a 14-day period, he should have started his imprisonment, but he claimed through his lawyers that he was unable to serve his sentence for health reasons.

Possibly, the detention could be converted into house arrest….

What are these alleged health reasons? Does he get about, or is he housebound? This reeks of corruption. And don’t German and Austrian prisons have some health care facilities? There are prisoners in UK, US and Canadian prisons with health problems, including cancer. Some are released early toward the end of a sentence due to health concerns, and I daresay there are rare cases where an alternative to imprisonment is decided due to health issues. But I| would be astonished if German and Austrian facilities were not as good as, if not light years better than, those of the UK, the US and Canada.
