Stockhausen’s trumpet icon dies, 84

The American trumpeter and composer Jon Hassel has died at 84. ‘After a little more than a year of fighting through health complications, Jon died peacefully in the early morning hours of natural causes,’ his family wrote on Facebook.

His friend Brian ENO had raised A GoFundMe capaign to support his health care.

Memphis born, Hassell studied at the Eastman School of Music before joining Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologine. He later collaborated with the American minimalist Terry Riley. He proposed a Fourth World style of music in his 1978 debut album, Vernal Equinox. He later renamed it metaclassical and metapop.

    I don’t know about “Stockhausen’s Trumpet Icon”. It makes for a good title, but really Mr Hassel (RIP) just studied in the composer’s classes for a while
