Joel Chadabe, a pioneer of electronic music, has died in Albany at 82.
Chabade developed the first major Moog Synthesizer studio and electronic music program at SUNY Albany, along with the Synclavier synthesizer.
He studied at Yale with Elliott Carter.

Devastated hearing Joel Chadabe has left us. His groundbreaking computer-electronic music was a revelation, truly inspiring. Joel promoted my music endlessly at CDeMusic, and after that, too. He asked me to write liner notes for my albums, evolving into a wide range of writings.
I certainly mean no disrespect to this gentleman’s memory but none of the so-called “pioneering” electronic music of the ’60s and ’70 by any composer is heard today. None.

I have no doubt that Charles Wuorinen’s “Time’s Encomium” is heard dozens of times every week, all across the country. It won the Pulitzer Prize, after all.

I met Joel at a synthesized music event at the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley some years back.
A very sweet man, and enthusiastic about answering any questions regarding his music or his electronic equipment.
Rest easy, Joel, and say “hi” to Bob Moog for me….
