German choirs are hit by post-Covid crisis
mainAn academic survey of 4,300 choruses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland finds that memmership has fallen sharply during Covid-19 and is unlikely to return to former levels.
Only one in three choirs expected to regain their full complement.
The situation is critical in children and young people’s choirs where one in eight of 580 surveyed ensembles has been disbanded.
The survey was conducted online by musicologist Kathrin Schlemmer at the Catholic University of Eichstätt.
Hopefully, like a phoenix, most of these will emerge once the crisis is (more or less) past.
Amen. How are choruses in Sweden doing? They have a great choral tradition.
