Curtis loses coach to cancer
RIPWe have been notified of the death, on May 8, of Ghenady Meirson, author of Do Sing in Russian and Russian repertoire coach at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.
He was also the go-to coach for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Opera Philadelphia, Philadelphia Singers, and the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia.
Such sad news! Ghena was also on faculty at The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philly. Not only was he one of the best Russian coaches but a sublime pianist and kind human being. We lost a great one far too soon. RIP
Ghena was a dear friend and a delightful sight in the neighborhood. He did many fine productions of Russian opera and art songs at the Academy of Vocal Arts. His work was seminal. He has a delightful family as well. I had no idea he was so ill. He is a major loss. He also established, with his wife, the website http://www.privatelessons.com. He worked hard to support his family. His wife studied voice at Curtis.
Ghena was incredibly kind, generous, and energetic. He meant so much to the many students he worked with over the last decades, and was a treasured colleague. His untimely passing is a completely tragic event.
So sorry to hear of Ghena’s death. He was a wonderful person and a musician of extraordinary talent. I was fortunate to know him and work with him through The Philadelphia Singers and Opera Company of Philadelphia. He is a great loss to many people and to Philadelphia’s cultural life.
