Berlin Phil cancels streamed concert over Covid+ baritone
mainMessage from the orchestra:
The baritone Vladislav Sulimsky, who was to sing the title role in the concert performance of the opera Mazeppa by Peter Tchaikovsky, is unfortunately unable to travel to Berlin because of a positive Covid-19 diagnosis.
With great regret, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko have decided to cancel the performance after no suitable replacement could be found at such short notice for the leading role in this very rarely performed opera.
Peter Tchaikovsky‘s opera Mazeppa was originally to be presented in the Festspielhaus at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden under chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and was to be streamed live in a concert performance from the Philharmonie Berlin in the Digital Concert Hall at 7:00 pm on 14 May 2021.
Whop-in Sergei Leiferkus with GSO and Neeme Järvi.
Will do the job for now.

“after no suitable replacement could be found at such short notice for the leading role.” Who can’t believe that ?!!! And no The Berlin Philharmonic is happy to inform you/us that Kirill Petrenko now goes on holiday. Simply farcical…
Did he tell you personally he is going on vacation? Spare us with such nonsense! And who is rehearsing the Tristan production in Munich which opens 6 weeks?
This concert performance was already a postponed event from the easter festival…
And not even an alternative concert. It would have unthinkable under Karajan, Abbado or Rattle. The point is: Petrenko is a “Mimose” with no sense of leadership. Not only farcical: pathetic.
I saw the first of May concert. It was strange to see the musicians in the lobby. I think it’s too early to talk about what is doing with the BPO. He already did some interisting things like the Villa Lobos symphony for the new year day eve.
