Italian singers are mourning the passing of Giorgio Gatti, a versatile singer in operas from the 16th to the 21st century.

Originally from Tuscany, he was based in Rome and performed in all the major Italian houses with Zubin Metha, Semyon Bychkov, Alberto Erede and others. He also appeared in a theatrical staging of the Julie Andrews film, Victor Victoria.

His wife, the pianist and harpsichordist Maria Teresa Conti would accompany him in recitals.

Giogrio was admitted to hospital in Rome last week with a serious Covid infection.
