Diapason reports that the French soprano Natalie Dessay is a candidate to run the Opéra national de Bordeaux, succeeding the controversial Marc Minkowski next year.

Dessay, originally from Bordeaux, says she wants to give the city ‘a new model of opera, for all audiences, all genres, all ages, in a post-Covid world that will lead us to change our habits.’

since she doesn’t sing any more (knowing about opera more than many others) who will object ? if only Monsieur Hurmic 😉

  • A.L. says:

A new model for opera? If she means opera in her own image, then thanks but no thanks. In other words, there is already enough opera as parody for yet another.

  • Singers should be Artistic Directors says:

Absolutely. I wasn’t a fan of her as a singer, but will say that any singer who has gone through the trials and tribulations of having a career and worked as hard as she did; working with all levels of personalities and ups and downs of the career are actually the people who SHOULD be running theaters.

  • Ulrich Brass says:

    Dessay is originally from Lyon

  • Niccolò says:

I think this was arranged before Minkowski’s ouster.

marvellous singer but that kind of politically correct statement makes me shiver of what we are going to get, do not forge tit was she who said microphones were the future….poor Bordeaux after the eternal failure called Minkowski…on the other hand it IS an intelligent woman but what SHE wants is not necessarily what the public wants
