Kiwi conductor claims Solti award
mainGemma New of New Zealand has been awarded the 2021 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.
New, 34, is music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada and principal guest conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
A musical and communicative conductor, and a deserving recipient of the Solti Award.
Good to read a positive appraisal of someone so young – and obviously talented. Well done and good luck in your career.
Doubtless, most if not all the thumbs-down come from the fusty musty boys-only club crowd on this blog.
Why all the negative thumbs down? I have never played under her direction but I thought she was good.
Interesting, how often musical enthusiasms or appreciations are expressed as dislikes, hereabouts.
Not just here.
Congratulations, Gemma! This award is richly deserved. We were so fortunate to have you as our music director for a few years, and it has been wonderful to hear about all your subsequent successes!
Good conductor! I’ve seen her at Tangelwood and in Montreal.
She subbed on short notice for an ill Bramwell Tovey in Elgar’s Enigma Variations with the Cleveland Orchestra a couple of summers ago and nailed it. One of the best performances I’ve ever heard of the piece.
