The American conductor James Gaffigan has been named Principal Guest Conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra with immediate effect.

Four months ago, he was expelled from Norway, accused of breaking Covid rules.

Gaffigan’s wife Camilla Kjøll is a violinist who often plays with the orchestra as concertmaster.

Congrats. Gaffigan did some good work in LA.

Also in Cleveland, where he had a position with the Cleveland Orchestra and also led a professional chamber orchestra (Citymusic Cleveland).

  • Patricia says:

Oh no! He broke COVID rules. Unforgiveable.

    • JussiB says:

that’s why we’re recalling CA governor Gavin Newsom.

Please see my reply in the original thread.

He was NOT expelled for breaking any COVID rules, he was told that he had overstayed as a non-resident non-EEA citizen and asked to leave. If he had been expelled, he could not have been employed in Norway just a few months later.

  • Edgar says:

Is James still Musikdirektor in Lucerne? Good for Trondheim to have him as Principal guest Conductor. Now let’s hope the Norwegian authorities let him in again…

  • Meg Sippey says:

    Congratulations Jimmy!

  • Wise Guy says:

He will do great. A first rate opera conductor who needs more symphonic experience.
