Covid death of eminent Italian opera director, 82
mainThe opera community in Italy is mourning the death of Ugo Tessitore, a productive force for many decades at the Rossini Festival and at the major opera houses. He was 82, and his death was reportedly caused by Covid.
Of a Roman family, Ugo studied music at the University of California, Berkeley and returned to work as Luca Ronconi’s assistant.
Last September 2020 he was due to revive Ronconi’s production of Viaggio in Reims at La Scala, only to be thwarted by its Covid closure.
