Avery Gagliano, an 18-year-old student at the Curtis Institute, was named First Prize winner of the 10th National Chopin Competition in Miami on Sunday evening. The award carries a cash prize of $100,000 and entry into the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw this coming October …

    Back when she was a public school student, she was given the run-around by her then public school administration for being “truant” despite her straight-A grades, strong academic support from parents, and a developing piano career:

    She’s absolutely polished and deserved to win. I saw the entire competition. But still, there was a 16 yo who was more impressive. But made more mistakes.
