Scots conductor quits Germany for English north
mainGarry Walker has told the Rheinischen Philharmonie in Koblenz that he won’t renew his contract, which expires next year.
He said his new job in Leeds, as music director of Opera North, will require all his attention.
Good man.
He will be missed at Koblenz – a lovely historic theatre with high standards – BUT welcomed at Opera North!
That’s another reason for me to go to Opera North then! Good news all round, I admire his commitment and honesty 🙂
His personal Brexit.
Garry is a wonderful conductor and his Billy Budd at Opera North was stupendous.
What a shame that Brexit has driven him out of the UK and…oh…hang on a minute…
You mean like good man Andrew Manze.
I’m amazed any Briton with the opportunity of dual citizenship with Europe has not taken it. I did hear that inquiries at the Irish Consulates have increased. All it does is ease travel in Europe.
For the moment, there are no problems with travel between Britain and the EU.
What a silly statement, saying “good man”. Happy to have him back in the Empire where he belongs?.
I believe what was meant by “good man” was that he has decided to focus his attention on primarily one organization instead of running the risk of stretching himself thin.
I second that “good man”.
I think the implication is that he’s a ‘good man’ for fully committing to his new appointment? Sounds fair enough.
There is such thing as irony.
Wonderful and VERY professional conductor, artist and committed performer of the best musical repertoire, great person – as well. Maestro, good luck in Leeds and you’ll be very missed!
