The Stage reports that the West End’s Queen’s Theatre will be renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, when its refurbishment is completed in December.

Cameron Mackintosh, the theatre owner, said: ‘For the past 25 years I have tried to build a studio theatre in central London named after Sondheim…’

The theatre is home to the long-running musical Les Miserables.

  • Olassus says:

    Queen’s Theatre = better name.

  • Mike says:

English Heritage listed buildings should also protect the original name of the theatre. Queen Alexandra will be turning in her grave.

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

Wish they would stop changing the names of theatres in London, it’s very confusing.

  • R. Brite says:

If I were Sondheim, I’d be appalled at the current occupant. Let’s hope something more appropriate eventually takes the place of Les Mis.

  • Factcheck says:

In fact, the Queen’s Theatre is to be renamed the Sondheim Theatre. (The Stephen Sondheim Theatre is on Broadway).
