Covent Garden rolls out raft of cast changes

There are almost a dozen changes in the first half of next season, hardly any major roles but most of the subs coming – encouragingly, in Brexit times – from the company’s own trainees.

Here’s the list:

Don Giovanni

13 September at 12 noon, 16 and 19 September at 7pm, 22 September at 6pm, 25 September at 7pm, 28 September and 3 October at 12 noon and 8 and 10 October at 7pm (Tuesday 8 October: Live Cinema Relay)

Due to ill-health, Lars Woldt has withdrawn from singing the role of the Commendatore in Don Giovanni.

The role will now be sung on 13, 16, 19 and 28 September and 3 October by British bass Brindley Sherratt and on 22 and 25 September and 8 and 10 October by Greek bass Petros Magoulas.

Don Pasquale
14, 18, 21 and 24 October at 7.45pm, 26 October at 12 noon, 30 October and 2 November at 7.45pm (Thursday 24 October: Live Cinema Relay)

British bass and Royal Opera Chorus member Bryan Secombe will sing the role of the Notary in all performances.

Otello 
9, 13, 16 and 19 December at 7.30pm, 22 December at 3pm

South African baritone Dawid Kimberg will sing the role of Herald in all performances.

La traviata 
17 and 21 December at 7pm, 24 December at 12 noon, 27 December and 6, 8, 12 and 22 January at 7pm, 25 January at 12 noon and 7pm, 27 and 28 January at 7pm, 30 January at 12 noon and 7pm, 1 February at 12 noon and 7pm, 14, 16, 19, 21 and 23 March at 7pm

Lithuanian mezzo-soprano and Royal Opera Chorus member Renata Skarelyte will sing the role of Annina on 25 January at 7pm, 27 January at 7pm, 30 January at 12 noon and 1 February at 7pm.

 

La bohème
10, 14, 17, 20 and 23 January at 7.30pm, 29 January at 8pm, 31 January at 7.30pm, 3 February at 7.30pm, 5 February at 8pm, 7 February at 12 noon and 11 and 13 February at 8pm

Romanian-born British soprano Simona Mihai will no longer sing the role of Mimì, but will perform the role of Musetta on 31 January and 3 and 5 February at 7.30pm. On 10, 14, 17, 20, 23 and 29 January the role of Musetta will be sung by Russian soprano Aida Garifullina as previously advertised.

The role of Mimì will now be sung by Russian soprano Ekaterina Siurina on 31 January and 3 and 5 February at 7.30pm.

British tenor and Royal Opera Chorus member Andrew Macnair will sing the role of Parpignol at all performances.

 

Alice’s Adventures Under Ground
3 February at 1.15pm, 4 February at 7pm and 9.15pm, 6 February at 7pm and 9.15pm, Saturday 8 February at 11.30am and 1.45pm, Sunday 9 February at 12 noon at 2.15pm

British conductor Thomas Adès will now conduct the performances of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground on the following dates:
4 February at 7pm and 9.15pm, 6 February 7pm and 9.15pm, 8 February at 1.45pm and 9 February at 2.15pm.

 

British conductor Finnegan Downie Dear will now conduct the performances of Alice’s Adventures Under Ground on the following dates:
Saturday 8 February at 11.30am and Sunday 9 February at 12 noon.

Cavalleria rusticana
11 April at 7pm, 14 April at 7.15pm, 18 April at 7pm, 21 April at 7.15pm, 25, 29 April and 2 May at 7.15pm

The role of Lola will be sung on 11, 14, 18, 21 and 25 April by Italian mezzo-soprano Josè Maria Lo Monaco and on 29 April and 2 May by Italian mezzo-soprano Martina Belli.
