New baton for Leipzig
mainThe ascendant New Zealand conductor Gemma New will make her Leipzig debut this Thursday with musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig and Mendelssohn Orchestral Academy.
She will direct Stravinsky, Mozart and the world premiere of Nathan Shields’ Commedia.
Great, good job. Wish her a long and fruitful career in this cut-throat world of sharks and charletons
What is a “charleton” — someone from the cleaning staff?
I think it’s a town in South-North Carolina…? (Points for catching the reference)
That should say….”Wozzeck reference”.
Nothing new… following the current fashion trend: promoting women into conducting positions regardless of their talent, knowledge or experience. Making “women visible” they call it… sometimes “giving opportunities to women” or “fixing a history of discrimination against women in music”. I got my position in my orchestra without any help and good women conductors will do the same. What is happening now is artificial and unnecessary.
Gemma is a fantastic young conductor who has been paving her own path since she graduated from Peabody. I don’t believe she got her positions with various orchestras through “making women visible”, she got them because she is great at what she does. I have had the privilege of playing under Gemma and I can attest to this fact.
New Zealanders often punch above their weight, so none of this surprises me!! Good luck, Gemma.
